What Is SugarFlag?

SugarFlag is a mobile app that helps you detect added sugars in food and drink products. Simply take a photo of a product label, and the app analyzes the ingredients and nutrition information to identify hidden added sugars — giving you a clear answer in seconds.

The app uses a two-step process:

Text extraction — the app reads the text from your product label photo using optical character recognition (OCR).
Sugar analysis — an AI model analyzes the extracted ingredients and nutrition data to identify added sugars, their types, and confidence level.

Each scan result includes the product name, sugar status (no added sugars, contains added sugars, or high added sugars), a list of identified sugar ingredients, confidence score, and nutrition breakdown.

Navigating the App

SugarFlag has three main tabs at the bottom of the screen:

Home

Start a new scan, learn about added sugars, and access educational content.

History

Browse all your previous scans, filter by category, and revisit results.

Profile

Manage your account, subscription, and app settings.

How to Scan a Product

Tap "Add Photo" on the Home screen.
Take a photo of the product label or select one from your photo library.
Wait for the text extraction step to complete — you'll see a quality indicator showing how well the label was read.
The app then analyzes the extracted text for added sugars and displays your result.
Your scan is automatically saved to History for future reference.

Scan Limits

Free accounts include a limited number of scans. To unlock unlimited scanning, you can upgrade to a Pro subscription from the Profile tab. If you've already subscribed, use "Restore Purchases" in your Profile to reactivate your plan.

Common Questions

Why is my scan result low confidence?

This usually means the photo quality was too low, the label was partially obscured, or the text was blurry. Try taking a clearer, well-lit photo of the full ingredients list and nutrition label.

Can I use SugarFlag without an account?

You need to create an account to scan products. You can sign up with Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In, or your email.

How do I manage my subscription?

Go to the Profile tab and tap "Manage Subscription". This will take you to your Apple subscription settings where you can change or cancel your plan.

How do I delete my account?

You can deactivate your account from the Profile tab. Your data will be retained for 30 days in case you change your mind, after which it is permanently deleted. You can also email us to request immediate deletion.
